How Do You Actually Get Someone to Change?

December 17, 2025 · Field Notes

Anyone who has tried to change another person, a friend stuck in a rut, a kid, an employee, knows the frustration. Push hard and they dig in. F3’s field manual explains why force fails, and what actually works instead.

Why can’t you just make someone change?

How Do You Actually Get Someone to Change?
Men change through proximity, not pressure.

Because, F3 says, real change has to be voluntary or it is not real. A man who wants to help someone might be tempted to bully them into it, to bend them with the force of his will. F3 says a good man resists that, for two reasons. First, it does not work. Change forced from the outside does not produce a genuine improvement in someone’s life. It produces resentment and a snap-back the moment the pressure comes off. Second, a good man has lines he will not cross, and coercing another person is one of them. So he sets force aside and reaches for something slower and stronger: persuasion. F3 has a sharper word for that slower approach, and it is worth pinning down what it means.

What is F3 actually describing by “influence”?

How Do You Actually Get Someone to Change?

Lighting a fire, not pushing a rock. F3 defines influence as igniting a real desire to move, getting a man to want the change rather than merely submitting to it. The difference matters. A pushed rock stops the moment you stop pushing. A fire, once lit, keeps burning on its own. Influence aims at that inner spark, the point where a man stops being moved by someone else and starts moving himself. But why does lighting a spark outlast shoving a man forward?

Why does that work when force doesn’t?

F3 uses the image of water behind a dam. Every man holds enormous potential, but held back it does nothing, like still water impounded behind a wall. It only becomes powerful when it is released and allowed to flow. You cannot shove that water into motion from the outside. What you can do is help a man open his own floodgates. That is the whole craft of influence, F3 says: not forcing the water, but helping a man decide to let it run. The change a man chooses is the only kind that lasts.
