Can You Really Help Someone From a Distance?

December 9, 2025 · Field Notes

It is easy to care about people from far away, to wish them well and hope things get better for them. F3’s field manual says that is not how anyone’s life actually changes. Real impact means closing the distance.

What does F3 mean by impact?

Can You Really Help Someone From a Distance?
Get near enough for it to cost you.

Something stronger than the everyday sense of the word. F3 defines it as forcible contact that produces a strong effect, an intense change in another person’s life. And forcible contact does not happen by accident or from a distance. It requires that at least one man actually move toward another and get near him. Nearness by itself is not enough either. Someone has to make the first move. Without a man willing to move, nothing happens. And if it all depends on a man moving first, it is worth asking why so few ever do.

Why do so few men make that move?

Can You Really Help Someone From a Distance?

Because it is uncomfortable, and most men avoid it. F3 is candid about who does and does not close the distance. Men who are barely holding on cannot; they are too depleted. Men stuck in the comfortable rut it calls the Sad Clown will not, because they are quietly clinging to a life they secretly dislike. That leaves the men F3 calls servants, the ones whose aim is to seek good for others, as the only ones who reliably move toward someone else in order to help. Impact is rare because the willingness behind it is rare. Even a willing man, though, has to close the actual distance, because help does not carry across it.

Why can’t you help a man from a distance?

Because the changes that matter are the close-up kind. F3 uses a plain image: to truly help a struggling man, you have to pull him into your boat so you are literally near him. Advice shouted across the water does not work. Whether it is helping a man who has lost his footing entirely or one who looks fine but is quietly sinking, the help only lands up close, in real proximity, over real time. F3 puts it in a single line: a man cannot have impact from afar. If you actually want to change someone’s life, you have to get near enough for it to cost you something.
