The instinct of most men in charge is to make themselves indispensable, to be the one nobody can do without. F3’s field manual says the opposite is the mark of a truly great leader. The best ones are quietly working themselves out of a job.
What does a great leader actually leave behind?

New leaders. F3 says the great ones are intent on leaving something that keeps helping their people long after they are gone. Since no man knows how much time he has, a great leader does not wait to hand things off. He develops other leaders now, so they are ready today instead of someday. F3 puts it bluntly: developing new leaders is not a nice extra a man does if he finds the time. It is leadership of the highest kind. If it is that important, it is worth asking why leaders are so often in short supply.
Why do most groups run short on leaders?

Because most groups have no real process for making them. They just hope leaders appear. F3 says the few groups that never run short are the ones that treat building leaders as a deliberate system, not an accident. A family, a company, a team, each one either grows leaders on purpose or slowly runs dry. So the practical question is how a man actually grows one.
How do you actually grow another leader?
F3 lays out four steps, in order. First, teaching: showing a man the basics of what leading really requires. Second, apprenticeship: letting him practice next to a more experienced leader who can correct him. Third, opportunity: handing him a real situation where the outcome is his responsibility, because knowing how to lead and actually leading are not the same thing. And fourth, failure. F3 says a healthy group even allows small failures on purpose, because failure teaches more than success ever will. Success feels good but hides what actually works. Failure makes it painfully clear. A man who wants to raise up others gives them room to try, and room to fall.
